Imam Hussain Holy Shrine Performs Rare Life-Saving Lung Surgery for Basra Patient

The Warith International Cancer Institute, affiliated with the Health and Medical Education Authority at the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, announced the success of its medical team in performing a complex surgery involving the complete removal of the right lung of a patient from Basra province after she was diagnosed with a rare tumor.

In a statement obtained by the official website, the institute said that “the Warith International Cancer Institute, affiliated with the Health and Medical Education Authority at the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, announces the success of its medical team in performing a complex surgical operation involving the complete removal of the right lung of a (32)-year-old patient from Basra province after she was diagnosed with a rare carcinoid tumor in the right main bronchus.”

The statement explained that “the patient had been suffering from coughing and recurring chest infections that did not fully respond to treatment, prompting the medical team to conduct precise examinations to uncover the real cause behind the continuation of her condition.”

It added that “CT scan examinations showed that the tumor was highly vascular, making a biopsy highly risky due to the possibility of severe bleeding.”

The statement continued that “the medical team resorted to conducting a (DOTATATE PET Scan) examination to accurately and safely determine the nature of the tumor, with the scan confirming the final diagnosis of the case.”

It further explained that “the case was later presented to a multidisciplinary medical team (MDT), and while initial assessments suggested the possibility of preserving the upper lobe of the lung, detailed examinations revealed the extension of the tumor, which required a medical decision to completely remove the right lung.”

The statement pointed out that “the patient’s family initially expressed hesitation regarding the decision because of the complexity of the surgery and the patient’s young age, but later agreed to the treatment plan after a series of medical consultations with specialists.”

It noted that “the medical team performed the surgery through a right thoracotomy and complete lung removal, after which the patient was transferred to intensive care for three days, during which her condition remained stable and gradually improved.”

The institute confirmed that “the final examination results proved the complete removal of the tumor without any extension near the main bronchus,” noting that “the patient later visited the institute in good health and continues to recover normally.”

It is worth noting that the Warith International Cancer Institute, affiliated with the Health and Medical Education Authority at the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, is equipped with the latest technologies and medical devices specialized in cancer diagnosis and treatment, contributing to the provision of precise and safe treatment plans for complex cases.
