Al-Karbalaei: Focus on Excellence Over Expansion in Institutions

The representative of the Supreme Religious Authority, Sheikh Abdul Mahdi al-Karbalaei, affirmed that the focus is not on increasing the number of projects, but rather on strengthening excellence and achieving distinction across various institutions, particularly in hospitals, universities, schools, and other projects. This came during a speech at the opening of the educational wing wards at the Imam Zain al-Abideen Hospital, affiliated with the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, and the unveiling of the new CT scan and MRI devices.

The representative of the Supreme Religious Authority stated that “as we have indicated previously, we do not seek to increase the number of projects, but rather aim to establish excellence and achieve distinction across various institutions, particularly in hospitals, universities, schools, and other projects. To achieve this excellence, we must ask questions and answer them transparently: how were we, where are we now, and how will we be in the future?” He explained that “before the completion of this project, in cases of pediatric heart conditions and open-heart surgeries, we considered it a positive outcome when we were able to send only two or three cases to India throughout the year. Today, by the grace of God, we have achieved a significant national and humanitarian accomplishment by performing these procedures within our country.”

He added that “what was considered an ambition in the past, such as open-heart and spinal surgeries, has now been realized. Therefore, we must set new goals today, such as liver transplantation and heart transplantation. Others are not better than us; they were simply provided with the necessary resources to achieve their ambitions, and we too are capable of reaching that level.”

He called for the aspirations of all, especially those with higher academic degrees and specialized expertise, to be limitless, noting that a person’s ambition in life—scientifically, medically, and socially—should not cease until the end of life.

He further stated that “our ambition does not stop here. We must believe that what seems difficult today can be achieved through self-confidence first, and reliance on God and trust in Him second. This also applies to universities, where working teams should continuously set new goals each time they accomplish a certain objective.”

He continued that “the key to success lies in complementary competition, not competitive rivalry, meaning that we complete one another through a spirit of teamwork. No individual, regardless of their brilliance, can reach the goal alone. Just as the human body, created by God, consists of multiple organs, the main organ depends on the simplest one so they can function together in harmony.”

He noted that “we hope universities will continue to develop further, particularly in the field of scientific research, as many countries have significantly advanced ahead of us in this area. Therefore, we should not limit ourselves to strong educational standards alone, but also strive to enhance the research dimension and seriously engage in scientific research fields to produce distinguished studies that strengthen our scientific standing.”
