Imam Hussain Shrine Plans World’s Largest Bone Marrow Project

The Health and Medical Education Authority at the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine has announced plans to establish the largest bone marrow transplant project in the world in terms of capacity and integration.

The head of the authority, Haider Al-Abadi, said in a statement to the official website that “the Health and Medical Education Authority at the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine has developed a plan to establish the largest project of its kind in the world for bone marrow transplantation in terms of capacity and integration.”

He explained that “the project will have a capacity of (100) transplant units, covering various types of procedures, including autologous and allogeneic transplants, in addition to cellular therapies in accordance with the latest international medical standards.”

He added that “this project is considered one of the unique initiatives with no equivalent in terms of size and integration, which will significantly help meet the needs of a wide segment of patients requiring such precise and complex procedures.”

He noted that “through this project, the authority aims to reduce the need for patients to travel abroad for treatment, ultimately achieving self-sufficiency in this advanced medical field.”

He pointed to “ongoing cooperation with the main bone marrow transplant center at Medical City in Baghdad,” adding that “existing centers in Iraq represent an important foundation, but the ambition is to further develop this sector to meet the actual needs of patients.”

He also highlighted that “one of the project’s key features is the effort to obtain internationally recognized accreditation in the field of bone marrow transplantation,” stressing that “the number of centers holding such accreditation in the Arab region is very limited, and we aim for the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine center to be among these accredited institutions, ensuring high reliability in performing procedures according to global standards.”

It is worth noting that the authority continues to implement specialized healthcare projects aimed at advancing the medical sector in Iraq and providing the best treatment services to patients either free of charge or at subsidized costs, in line with the vision of the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine to serve the community.
