Warith Institute Launches First Radioisotope Uterine Treatment

The Warith International Cancer Institute, affiliated with the Health and Medical Education Authority at the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, announced the availability of radioisotope therapy for the treatment of uterine remnants, marking the first time this technique has been introduced in Iraq.

Dr. Radwa Hamdi, a specialist in radioisotopes at the institute, said in a statement to the official website that “Warith International Cancer Institute, affiliated with the Health and Medical Education Authority at the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, announces the availability of radioisotope therapy for treating uterine remnants, which is the first of its kind in Iraq.”

She explained that this type of treatment had not previously been available in Iraq, forcing patients to travel abroad to receive it. She noted that for some cases, this therapy represents the only treatment option, particularly for patients who underwent incomplete surgeries for uterine or cervical tumors.

Dr. Hamdi added, “Unfortunately, this treatment remained unavailable inside Iraq for many years. However, the institute has been working on it for some time, completing all necessary requirements and training medical, nursing, physical, and support staff, allowing its official launch today.”

She further stated that this medical service is highly advanced and sophisticated, and it is expected to benefit patients from all Iraqi governorates.

She pointed out that one of the key advantages of this technique is its ability to deliver the appropriate dose without causing damage to surrounding organs such as the bladder, rectum, and intestines. Through this method, the tumor can be completely eliminated without removing the uterus, while preserving adjacent organs. This contributes to reducing side effects experienced by patients, including severe inflammation of the bladder or rectum.

She also noted that two locations are now available to provide this treatment: Warith International Cancer Institute in Karbala and Al-Thaqalayn Hospital in Basra.

This advanced step reflects the commitment of the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, through its Health and Medical Education Authority and specialized institutions, to introducing the latest therapeutic technologies into Iraq’s healthcare sector. It also underscores efforts to localize specialized treatments within the country, easing patients’ suffering, reducing the burden of travel abroad, and enhancing the level of medical care in line with the highest scientific and humanitarian standards, reaffirming its leading role in serving people and safeguarding their health and dignity.
