Warith International Cancer Institute, affiliated with the Health and Medical Education Authority at the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, has announced an unprecedented medical achievement in Iraq after successfully performing (200) therapeutic catheterization procedures for retinoblastoma in children using the Intra-arterial Chemotherapy technique. The milestone represents a major advancement in saving children's eyes without the need for removal.
In a statement obtained by the official website, the foundation said, "Warith International Cancer Institute, affiliated with the Health and Medical Education Authority at the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, has achieved an unprecedented medical milestone in Iraq by successfully performing (200) therapeutic catheterization procedures for retinoblastoma in children using the 'Intra-arterial Chemotherapy' technique, marking a major step forward in preserving children's eyes without the need for enucleation."
The statement explained that "the technique delivers the chemotherapy dose directly and with exceptional precision through the ophthalmic artery to the tumor without passing through the systemic bloodstream." It noted that "this precise approach has significantly reduced the severe systemic side effects associated with conventional chemotherapy, which affects the entire body, while enabling complete tumor control and preserving both the eye and its vision, instead of resorting to enucleation, which had previously been the standard option in many advanced cases."
It added that "the foundation has already begun receiving children from outside Iraq for treatment following the center's growing reputation." It noted that "this continued achievement is based on multidisciplinary treatment protocols that bring together ophthalmologists, pediatric oncologists, and neurointerventional specialists in brain and nervous system catheterization, working as an integrated team in accordance with strict international standards for early diagnosis and precise intervention."
The foundation said this rapid medical advancement is in line with the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine's firm commitment to developing Iraq's healthcare sector, positioning the institute as a leading regional treatment center that offers children and their families a new chance at life and renewed hope. It also reaffirmed its commitment to continuously upgrading its medical system and attracting the latest expertise and technologies to serve all patients.
