Iraq harvests its first crop of dragon fruit

The Iraqi Ministry of Agriculture announced on Saturday that, in cooperation with the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine in Karbala, it has successfully harvested Iraq’s first yield of dragon fruit.

In a statement received by the official website, the ministry confirmed that the collaboration between both sides resulted in overcoming legal and procedural requirements that allowed the introduction of the tropical plant (dragon fruit) into Iraq.

The statement noted that this joint success, marked by harvesting the first fruits after transferring the plant from its native regions in Central and South America to Iraq, comes after the fruit had previously been limited to certain Asian and Arab countries.

Specialists in plant nurseries explained that the dragon fruit is known for its pleasant flavor and comes in three main varieties: pink skin with white flesh, pink skin with red flesh, and yellow skin with white flesh.
