The Cooling Division of the Engineering and Technical Projects Department at the Holy Shrine of Imam Hussain has announced the implementation of a comprehensive mechanism to lower temperatures in the outdoor areas surrounding the holy courtyard. The initiative is part of the shrine’s efforts to provide comfortable and safe conditions for visitors during the Arbaeen pilgrimage.
Engineer Safaa Ali, head of the division, told the official website that, “Under the direct guidance of the representative of the Supreme Religious Authority, Sheikh Abdul-Mahdi Al-Karbalaey, and the supervision of the Secretary-General of the Holy Shrine of Imam Hussain, Mr. Hassan Rashid Al-Abayji, cooling systems have been installed to reduce temperatures by approximately 9°C in the outdoor areas around the holy courtyard, in conjunction with the Arbaeen pilgrimage.” He added that “this year’s plan is broader and more professional than in previous years.”
He explained that the plan included equipping the holy courtyard with a cooling capacity of up to 9,000 tons.
The plan also covered cooling external spaces by deploying mist fan systems in all surrounding areas and streets leading to the shrine, in addition to installing both fixed and mobile shading systems. Furthermore, 3,700 air coolers were distributed in covered areas and newly built sites prepared for accommodating pilgrims, as well as in areas close to the holy courtyard. All these systems, he noted, are produced by the Al-Warith Factory affiliated with the Holy Shrine.
Ali pointed out that fog cannon systems were installed at the entrances of main streets leading to the holy courtyard. The plan also utilized mobile shading technology, which helps regulate humidity levels and create optimal conditions that reduce the spread of diseases.
Specialized teams of engineers and technicians have been deployed to monitor temperatures and oversee the performance of the cooling systems using modern technical devices.
These measures fall within the Holy Shrine’s vision to ensure a healthy environment and provide comprehensive services for the millions of pilgrims arriving from inside Iraq and abroad to commemorate the Arbaeen pilgrimage.
