The Al-Mujtaba Center for Bone Marrow Transplant and Hematology, affiliated with the Health and Medical Education Authority of the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, participated in the 4th International Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant and Gene Therapy Conference (EPBMTC 2025) held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The presentation was titled “Challenges and Achievements in Building a Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant Program in a Developing Country, A Single Center Experience in Iraq.”
The Director of the Al-Mujtaba Center, Dr. Muayyad Al-Janabi, stated that the research highlighted the establishment of the hospital’s program since 2024, including the development of stem cell laboratories, the implementation of strict infection control protocols, and the training of qualified medical and nursing staff according to international standards.
He added that the center presented a scientific paper at the conference, delivered by Dr. Hanafi Ahmed Hafez, Head of the Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant Program, under the same title. The study discussed the center’s progress and its clinical outcomes.
Dr. Al-Janabi explained that the results recorded 30 successful pediatric bone marrow transplants for children under the age of fifteen, including 24 autologous and 6 allogeneic transplants, with a disease-free survival (DFS) rate of 57.8% and an overall survival (OS) rate of 80% in cases of neuroblastoma, with no transplant-related deaths within the first 100 days.
He emphasized that this scientific paper reflects the ongoing research and clinical advancement at Al-Mujtaba Hospital and the continuous efforts of the Health and Medical Education Authority of the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine to strengthen pediatric bone marrow transplant programs and apply the highest clinical standards in Iraq.
