In a qualitative medical and diagnostic achievement carried out for the first time in southern Iraq, the Radiology and Medical Imaging Department at Al-Thaqlayn Cancer Hospital, affiliated with the Health and Medical Education Authority at Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, has successfully conducted a Contrast-Enhanced Mammography (CEM) exam for a 39-year-old woman from Dhi Qar Governorate.
In an official statement obtained by the (Official Site), the hospital stated that "the patient visited Al-Thaqlayn Cancer Hospital following the appearance of a mass in the (breast) during a mammogram examination; however, precisely locating its position was not possible via ultrasound, while performing a breast magnetic resonance imaging (Breast MRI)—which is typically utilized in such cases—was not feasible based on the decision of her attending physician due to her having previously undergone heart valve replacement surgery."
The statement added that "the medical team resorted to the Contrast-Enhanced Mammography (CEM) technique as an advanced and safe diagnostic option for the case, given that the technology relies on injecting a contrast agent followed by specialized breast imaging, helping reveal contrast-enhanced areas within breast tissues and accurately defining the nature, location, and extent of the lesion, which contributes to guiding the biopsy more precisely."
It further noted that "incorporating this technology into the hospital's diagnostic services represents an important step in advancing early detection and diagnostic methods for breast diseases and tumors, providing an additional alternative for patients who cannot undergo an MRI scan due to medical reasons."
The statement pointed out that "providing this advanced examination at Al-Thaqlayn Cancer Hospital will broaden diagnostic options for patients in the southern governorates, sparing them the burden of traveling to medical centers outside the region, as well as supporting physicians in reaching more accurate diagnoses and devising suitable treatment plans."
This achievement comes as part of the efforts of Al-Thaqlayn Cancer Hospital, belonging to Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, to continuously develop its medical and diagnostic services and introduce modern technologies, contributing to raising the level of healthcare provided to patients, particularly in the field of diagnosing and treating breast diseases and tumors.
