The technical and engineering teams of the Maintenance Department at the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine continue implementing a large-scale service campaign to provide safe drinking water to residents, government institutions, schools, and Hussaini processions across Basra Governorate. The campaign is being carried out under the direct guidance of the Representative of the Supreme Religious Authority, Sheikh Abdul Mahdi Al-Karbalaei, to help ease the effects of the water shortage crisis and rising salinity levels affecting several districts and subdistricts of the governorate.
In a statement obtained by the official website, the Head of the Department, Abdul Hassan Mohammed, said, "The technical and engineering teams of the Maintenance Department at the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine continue implementing a large-scale service campaign to provide safe drinking water to residents, government institutions, schools, and Hussaini processions in Basra Governorate, under the direct guidance of the Representative of the Supreme Religious Authority, Sheikh Abdul Mahdi Al-Karbalaei, to reduce the impact of the water shortage crisis and the increasing salinity levels in several districts and subdistricts of the governorate."
He explained that "the department's teams have mobilized their technical and service capabilities to respond quickly and ease the suffering of the people of Basra Governorate following the significant rise in salinity levels in the main and secondary rivers, which caused a number of local filtration and desalination plants to cease operations due to salt deposits."
He added that "as part of its religious and humanitarian duty, the department has prepared a comprehensive emergency plan to fill and transport fresh water using tanker trucks from desalination plants operated by the Imam Hussain and Al-Abbas Holy Shrines in the areas of Al-Nashwa, Buka, and Safwan, delivering it directly to residents in the hardest-hit areas."
He further noted that "the distribution plan is being carried out based on precise field assessments and in coordination with local community leaders and the Popular Mobilization Forces brigades to identify the areas most affected by the salinity crisis. The department's teams have successfully met the daily water needs of more than (15) remote residential areas, in addition to filling household water tanks and community reservoirs to help ensure a stable water supply for families."
He pointed out that "the campaign also includes supplying between (15–20) government schools each day with fresh water to provide a healthy environment for students, while also supporting Hussaini processions along the routes taken by pilgrims traveling from Basra Governorate to the holy city of Karbala for the Arbaeen pilgrimage, ensuring the uninterrupted delivery of services to visitors."
This campaign is part of a series of humanitarian and service initiatives carried out by the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine across various Iraqi governorates, particularly in areas facing environmental and public service challenges, reaffirming its role in supporting government efforts and providing direct assistance to the families and communities most affected.
