Warith Academy Prepares to Launch National Experts Council on Environment, Water, and Agriculture

The Warith Academy for Sustainable Development, affiliated with the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, has announced the completion of all preparations to launch the activities of the National Experts Council on Environment, Water, and Agriculture, with the participation of a select group of experts, academics, and representatives of relevant government entities.

Director of the academy, engineer Aqeel Al-Sharifi, stated in an interview with the official website that “the Warith Academy for Sustainable Development, affiliated with the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, has completed all preparations for launching the activities of the National Experts Council on Environment, Water, and Agriculture, with the participation of a distinguished group of experts, academics, and representatives of relevant government bodies.”

He explained that “these activities, scheduled to be held on Saturday, 25 April 2026, and continuing for four days, will include a series of workshops and specialized scientific sessions aimed at discussing key issues and exchanging expertise, in addition to reviewing the most prominent challenges facing the fields of environment, water, and agriculture in Iraq.”

He added that “the discussions will particularly focus on the impact of climate change and the shortage of water supplies coming from upstream countries, and the direct challenges these pose to the future of water and food security, as well as their implications for social stability.”

He continued that “the first day will witness the opening of the activities with the presence of representatives from the Ministries of Agriculture, Water Resources, and Environment, where the technical deputies of these ministries will present overviews addressing the main challenges facing their institutions, along with highlighting current efforts in managing these issues and outlining future directions in light of available human resources, technical expertise, and financial capabilities.”

He noted that “the Experts Council will work over the next six months to prepare a short-term strategic paper spanning (3–5) years, including practical and implementable solutions that take into account real challenges and resource limitations, with the aim of developing the management of environmental, water, and agricultural sectors, with a particular focus on the water file in both its environmental and agricultural aspects to ensure resource sustainability.”

He pointed out that “the outcomes of these efforts will be presented to the upcoming government and the legislative authority represented by the Council of Representatives, with the aim of supporting the adoption of the proposed solutions and transforming them into effective policies and implementation programs.”

It is worth noting that the National Experts Council on Environment, Water, and Agriculture was established by the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine in late 2025, in the presence of the Secretary-General of the shrine and a number of experts and specialists in related fields, as part of efforts to support scientific and strategic approaches to addressing environmental, water, and agricultural challenges in Iraq.
