Imam Hussain Holy Shrine Begins Tree-Planting Campaign in Karbala

The Al-Warith Academy for Sustainable Development and Strategic Studies, affiliated with the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, has announced the launch of a wide-ranging environmental campaign under the slogan “Our Iraq is Green in Your Name, O Hussain,” aimed at planting thousands of trees in educational institutions across Karbala Governorate as part of a strategic project to build comprehensive environmental awareness.

The academy’s director, Aqeel Kazem Al-Sharifi, told the official website that “the Al-Warith Academy for Sustainable Development and Strategic Studies, affiliated with the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, has launched an extensive environmental campaign under the slogan ‘Our Iraq is Green in Your Name, O Hussain,’ targeting the planting of thousands of trees in educational institutions across Karbala Governorate, as part of a strategic initiative aimed at fostering comprehensive environmental awareness.”

He explained that “the tree-planting campaign in Karbala’s schools is part of a broader project seeking to instill environmental culture within society, starting from the educational environment, particularly primary schools, by embedding environmental values and nurturing a generation that applies nature preservation standards beginning at school.”

He added that “the project is not limited to planting trees, but also includes the establishment of environmental teams in each school, directly linked to the academy, with the aim of developing and supervising them. These teams will include a select group of distinguished and motivated students who will become active and influential contributors to improving the environmental landscape in Iraq.”

He noted that “students will undergo, under the supervision of their school administrations, a preparatory knowledge program that includes a series of courses and field visits to environmental reserves, nurseries of the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, and desert farms, ensuring direct engagement with on-the-ground environmental initiatives.”

He pointed out that “the campaign will continue until the project is completed with the planting of thousands of trees,” highlighting that “olive trees have been selected due to their high tolerance to climatic conditions, low water requirements, as well as their economic and strategic value, making them an ideal choice for enhancing green cover in the governorate.”

This campaign comes amid growing attention to environmental initiatives in Karbala, particularly in light of the country’s climate challenges, including rising temperatures and shrinking green spaces.
