The Warith International Cancer Institute, affiliated with the Health and Medical Education Authority of the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, has announced continued accelerated work to complete the biobank project, the first of its kind in Iraq. The initiative represents a strategic step aimed at achieving a qualitative leap in genetic medicine and clinical research.
The head of the authority, Dr. Haider Al-Abbadi, said in a statement to the official website that “the Warith International Cancer Institute, affiliated with the Health and Medical Education Authority of the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, is continuing work to complete the biobank project, which is the first of its kind in Iraq, in a strategic move aimed at creating a qualitative shift in the field of genetic medicine and clinical research.”
He explained that “the project will serve as an optimal repository for stem cells in accordance with the latest international standards. It will also function as an advanced center for conducting genetic mapping tests for tumors and rare diseases, contributing to greater diagnostic accuracy and supporting personalized treatments based on genetic analysis, in line with the rapid advancements in modern medicine.”
He added that “the biobank will form a fundamental pillar for supporting and advancing clinical research in Iraq by providing a database and biological samples that enable researchers and physicians to conduct advanced scientific studies, elevating the level of healthcare services and opening new horizons for national expertise in medical research and innovation.”
He continued that “this specialized project is being implemented in cooperation with (Earthlink) as part of its community contribution programs, reflecting a progressive understanding of the importance of investing in the specialized healthcare sector and strengthening partnerships between health institutions and the private sector to serve the community.”
He noted that “work is ongoing to complete the final stages of the project in preparation for its official launch, so that it may serve as an advanced national platform in the field of biological sample preservation and genetic research, and as a key supporter of healthcare development in Iraq.”
The project falls within the vision of the Health and Medical Education Authority at the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, which seeks to establish pioneering strategic initiatives that contribute to restoring Iraq’s scientific and medical standing and to providing advanced healthcare services comparable to leading global centers.
