The Al-Abbas Holy Shrine has initiated a large-scale tree-planting campaign along the Ya Hussain Pilgrims’ Route, which connects the holy cities of Najaf and Karbala. The project is being carried out in coordination with the Karbala local government and was launched in the presence of the Secretary-General of the Holy Shrine, members of its Board of Directors, and local officials, underscoring the significance of the initiative and marking the formal start of its execution.
Mr. Jawad Al-Hasnawi, head of the project’s supervisory committee, stated that the Holy Shrine has begun implementing the tree-planting project along the Ya Hussain Route in an effort to ease the hardships faced by pilgrims during major religious observances, many of which occur during the summer when high temperatures and scarce shade increase physical strain. He added that His Eminence Sayed Ahmad Al-Safi had directed the Shrine’s administration to begin an extensive planting campaign along both sides of the road from Karbala to Najaf to help create a more comfortable environment for pilgrims.
He explained that the first phase of the project is already in progress, covering the section starting from the ring road (Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis Street) in Karbala and extending to the Khan Al-Nus area. He stressed that the Holy Shrine has activated all relevant departments and mobilized its logistical and technical capabilities to ensure successful implementation.
Al-Hasnawi noted that the effort is being carried out in cooperation with the Karbala local government, represented by the Public Services Department, as well as other service institutions including the General Authority for Groundwater, Karbala branch, which is managing the project’s water-supply and irrigation needs.
For his part, Mr. Ahmed Nour Mahdi, the resident engineer for the Karbala–Najaf project, stated that Karbala’s service departments have begun planting trees along a 35-kilometer stretch of the Ya Hussain Route in direct collaboration with the Al-Abbas Holy Shrine. He explained that the project includes the segment extending from the Karbala–Najaf border to the ring road (Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis Street).
Mahdi confirmed that work is steadily progressing to plant trees along both the Ya Hussain and Ya Ali roads, each spanning 35 kilometers, enhancing the environmental and service landscape along the pilgrims’ pathways.
