Bayina Center Discusses “Misconception of Freedom” and Warns of the Risks of Harmful Digital Content on Society

The Bayina Center for Intellectual and Cultural Security, affiliated with the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, organized an awareness workshop titled “The Misunderstood Concept of Freedom… Harmful Content as a Model.” The session addressed the distorted understanding of freedom on media and digital platforms and the negative effects it leaves on societal thought and behavior.

The workshop was moderated by the Center’s cultural and media advisor, Mr. Salam Al-Bannai, while the main lecture was delivered by Dr. Muhammad Abdul-Abbas Al-Moussawi, in the presence of professors, mentors, and educational supervisors from the Karbala Education Directorate, along with a number of the Center’s advisors and guests.

During the workshop, the Center’s Director, Sheikh Ali Al-Qar’awi, emphasized that the Bayina Center continues to carry out its role in safeguarding societal awareness through intellectual and cultural programs. He highlighted the variety of causes behind intellectual and behavioral deviation, ranging from ideological, doctrinal, economic, and educational factors, which create a fertile environment for the spread of distorted concepts and harmful content. He also presented several intellectual and educational solutions, including enhancing the roles of the family, schools, and cultural institutions in protecting youth and raising true awareness of the meaning of freedom.

In his lecture, Dr. Al-Moussawi discussed freedom as a noble human value and an indicator of developed consciousness, warning against associating freedom with disorder or disrespect for public morals. He affirmed that irresponsible media contributes to distorting values and fueling deviant behaviors among young people. He also reviewed the reasons behind the appeal of harmful content, its psychological and behavioral impacts, and the role of educational counselors in addressing it through effective awareness programs.

The workshop included insightful contributions from several experts, including Mr. Abdul Jabbar Al-Zuheiri, Head of the Peaceful Coexistence Committee; Dr. Khalil Al-Tayyar, Advisor for International Relations at the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine; and Dr. Jassim Al-Nuwal, a specialist supervisor at the Karbala Education Directorate.

The workshop concluded with a set of recommendations emphasizing the need to enhance societal awareness about the dangers of harmful digital content and the importance of cooperation among families, schools, and media and cultural institutions to counter it. Certificates of participation were also distributed to attendees.
