Imam Hussain Holy Shrine Sets Iraq Record with (530) Lutetium Therapy Doses

Warith International Cancer Institute, affiliated with the Health and Medical Education Authority at the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, has announced a record achievement in nuclear medicine after successfully providing and securing (530) doses of advanced Lutetium (Lu-177) therapy in just (3) years.

In a statement obtained by the official website, the Institute said, "Warith International Cancer Institute, affiliated with the Health and Medical Education Authority at the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, has achieved a record in the field of nuclear medicine after successfully providing and securing (530) doses of advanced Lutetium (Lu-177) therapy in just (3) years. The doses were administered to patients at the Institute in Holy Karbala and at Al-Thaqalayn Hospital for Cancer Treatment in Basra, a number exceeding what some major international hospitals have provided over (10) years, reflecting the foundation's rapid progress in cancer treatment using the latest nuclear medicine technologies."

The statement explained that "Lutetium (Lu-177) therapy is among the world's most advanced nuclear medicine techniques and is used specifically to treat complex and advanced cancers, most notably metastatic prostate cancer, particularly advanced cases resistant to hormonal and chemotherapy treatments, as well as metastatic neuroendocrine tumors. The therapy works by directly and precisely targeting cancer cells without harming the surrounding healthy tissue."

It added that "the introduction of these rare nuclear medicine technologies to Iraq comes in line with the directives of the Representative of the Supreme Religious Authority, Sheikh Abdul Mahdi Al-Karbalaei, to end the suffering of Iraqi patients and spare them the burden and high cost of traveling abroad." It also affirmed "the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine's continued commitment, through its healthcare institutions, to modernizing its treatment system and adopting the latest scientific advances in the fight against cancer."

The achievement comes as part of the continued expansion of the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine's healthcare institutions in introducing the latest global treatment technologies to Iraq, particularly in oncology and nuclear medicine, with the aim of providing advanced therapies that were previously available only at specialized centers outside the country.
