The representative of the Supreme Religious Authority, Sheikh Abdul Mahdi Al-Karbalaei, affirmed that the successful completion of two simultaneous liver transplant operations represents a significant and specialized medical achievement in Iraq. His remarks came during the inauguration of the Liver Transplant Center at Imam Zain Al-Abidin Hospital, affiliated with Imam Hussain Holy Shrine.
The representative of the Supreme Religious Authority stated that “this success is a message of self-confidence, hope, and pride for Iraq and its medical personnel, and it reflects the importance of cooperation and integration among health and medical institutions.”
He explained that “it is necessary not to overlook or underestimate the previous medical achievements accomplished in Iraq,” noting that “successful liver transplant operations had previously been carried out at the government-run Imam Al-Hassan Al-Mujtaba Hospital in the city of Karbala, in addition to other operations in Medical City and Basra.”
He added that “the distinction of the current experience lies in conducting two successful operations simultaneously within a short period, alongside efforts to sustain and maintain this success.”
He pointed out that “the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine adopts principles in its medical projects based on preserving human dignity and health, strengthening cooperation between health and educational institutions, and believing in the possibility of turning the impossible into reality through reliance on God, self-confidence, determination, and joint efforts.”
He further stated that “reaching this stage came after a period of planning and work that lasted for more than a year, in cooperation with medical teams and external expertise, with the aim of building Iraqi capabilities capable of achieving future self-sufficiency in the field of liver transplantation.”
At the conclusion of his speech, the representative of the Supreme Religious Authority directed “the medical staff and health institutions affiliated with the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, in cooperation with the state, to begin a number of new medical projects and set clear timelines for their completion.”
He explained that “the projects include launching a national initiative to train Iraqi medical personnel with the goal of achieving full self-sufficiency in performing liver transplant operations by entirely Iraqi medical teams, in addition to working on a stem cell transplantation project in its various stages, a heart transplant project, as well as a living limb transplantation project in accordance with medical and religious regulations, even if this requires seeking expertise from outside Iraq during the initial stages.”
