Imam Zain Al-Abideen Teaching Hospital, affiliated with the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, announced the success of the first simultaneous liver transplant operations performed in Iraq, marking a major advancement in the country’s healthcare sector.
Hospital Director Dr. Abdul Rahman Ismail said that “with the support of the representative of the Supreme Religious Authority, Sheikh Abdul Mahdi Al-Karbala’i, Imam Zain Al-Abideen Teaching Hospital, affiliated with the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, successfully performed the first simultaneous liver transplant operations in Iraq, in a step considered a major breakthrough in the Iraqi healthcare sector.”
He explained that “liver transplant operations are among the most complex and delicate surgical procedures in the world, and both operations were carried out successfully at the same time inside the hospital after continuous efforts that lasted for more than a year and a half.”
He added that “the preparations included establishing a fully integrated and specialized liver transplant center equipped with the latest advanced medical devices, in addition to preparing operating rooms, recovery units, intensive care units, and inpatient wards according to the highest medical standards.”
He continued that “both operations were completed with remarkable success, representing an important beginning for conducting more liver transplant procedures inside Iraq and reducing the need for patients to travel abroad for this type of complex treatment,” noting that “the hospital established the largest and first liver transplant center in Iraq.”
This achievement comes within the efforts of the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine to develop the healthcare sector and localize advanced medical services inside Iraq through its specialized medical institutions.
