Imam Zain Al-Abideen Hospital Saves Patient with Rare Coronary Blockage Without Open-Heart Surgery

The cardiac catheterization team at the Imam Zain Al-Abideen Teaching Hospital, affiliated with the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, achieved a notable medical success after saving a patient suffering from a rare and dangerous condition involving a blockage at the origin of the left main coronary artery. Such cases are considered critical and often require urgent intervention through open-heart surgery.

Mustafa Al-Mousawi, the hospital’s Media Officer, said in a statement to the official website that “the cardiac catheterization team at the Imam Zain Al-Abideen Teaching Hospital, affiliated with the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, succeeded in performing an emergency cardiac catheterization for a patient suffering from a blockage at the origin of the left main coronary artery, which is regarded as one of the complex and rare cases worldwide.”

He added that “the patient’s condition suddenly deteriorated, leading to cardiac arrest, which required immediate intervention by the medical team. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was performed urgently, followed by a catheter-based intervention without the need for open-heart surgery.”

He explained that “the medical team successfully opened the artery using a specialized balloon and implanted a drug-eluting stent using the (Flare) technique, with slight protrusion of the stent into the aorta. The procedure was completed with successful results.”

He noted that “after the therapeutic intervention was completed, the patient was transferred to the cardiac intensive care unit to continue treatment and monitoring for two days, after which the patient recovered and was discharged from the hospital in stable health.”

He indicated that “the case was supervised by cardiology and cardiac catheterization specialist Dr. Hadaf Issam Al-Abadi, with the participation of assisting technicians Ahmed Al-Shammari, Karrar Jabbar, and Ibrahim Al-Serwan.”

This achievement comes within the framework of the ongoing medical efforts undertaken by the healthcare institutions affiliated with the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine to provide advanced therapeutic services using the latest medical technologies, contributing to saving patients’ lives and enhancing the level of healthcare provided to citizens.
