The Strategic Projects Department of the General Secretariat of the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine continues its work on the Autism Center project in Basra Governorate, one of the Shrine’s key humanitarian and service initiatives aimed at supporting and caring for children with special needs.
Engineer Muhammad Diaa Muhammad, head of the department, stated in an interview that construction is progressing at a steady and rapid pace, with the overall completion rate reaching about 85 percent. He explained that the center is being built on a land area of 1.25 hectares, with a total built-up space of 10,060 square meters distributed across three floors.
He added that the project has now entered its final stages, with interior and exterior finishing work nearing completion. The stone cladding of the facades and the installation of the glass curtain wall have been finalized, while work on the drop ceilings, flooring, and staircases has also been completed. Interior painting and elevator installation are currently underway.
The facility will include classrooms and treatment halls of varying sizes, a therapeutic swimming pool, a rehabilitation gym, and specialized rooms for speech therapy. It will also feature administrative offices and a restaurant to accommodate staff and visitors.
Engineer Muhammad further noted that the project includes landscaped green areas and outdoor sports facilities, such as two volleyball courts and a five-a-side football field, to provide a holistic environment that supports both the physical and psychological well-being of the children receiving care.
This project forms part of the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine’s wider initiative to implement service and social projects across Iraq’s governorates, aimed at improving humanitarian, healthcare, and educational standards throughout the country.
