Imam Ali ibn Muhammad, known as al-Hadi (the Guide), was the tenth Imam of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them). His life was marked by the harshness of Abbasid oppression, exile from his homeland, and strict surveillance. Yet, Imam al-Hadi became a timeless symbol of spiritual authority, patience, and unwavering resistance, teaching his followers how to remain firm upon the truth while living under unjust rule.
Birth and Lineage
Imam Ali al-Hadi (a.s.) was born in Medina in 212 AH. His father was Imam Muhammad al-Jawad (a.s.), known for his generosity and knowledge, and his mother was Lady Samānah, a virtuous and wise woman. Raised in the sacred city of Medina, Imam al-Hadi grew up in an environment of Qur'anic knowledge, piety, and noble character.
His Title: “al-Hadi”
The title “al-Hadi”, meaning the Guide, reflects his role in guiding the ummah during a time of widespread political corruption. Despite the restrictions placed upon him, Imam al-Hadi guided people through letters, personal representatives, and silent endurance, keeping the light of true Islam alive.
Forced Exile to Samarra
During the reign of the Abbasid caliph al-Mutawakkil, Imam al-Hadi was forcibly exiled from Medina to Samarra (Iraq), where he was placed under house arrest. The tyrant hoped to limit his influence, but instead, the Imam’s presence in Samarra became a spiritual refuge for truth-seekers.

Imam al-Hadi combined deep knowledge with humility, kindness, and firmness against oppression. His wisdom silenced the court scholars who tried to challenge him.
His life was a daily sermon in contentment, reliance on God, and trust in divine justice, even while living among enemies.
Spiritual Leadership
Despite being imprisoned, Imam al-Hadi:

Martyrdom
After years of strict confinement, Imam al-Hadi was poisoned by the Abbasid caliph al-Muʿtazz and attained martyrdom in 254 AH in Samarra. He was buried in Samarra, where his blessed shrine remains a place of solace for millions, despite historical attempts to erase it.
