In Friday’s Sermon held at the Imam Hussain Shrine on September 13, 2019, the representative of the Shia Muslim Supreme Religious Authority, sheikh Abdul-Mehdi Elkerbela’i, talked about deepening true sorrow and loyal love for Imam Hussain (Peace Be Upon Him).
Elkerbela’i said, “We’re living these days of the tragedy anniversary of Imam Hussain (Peace Be Upon Him),” noting that it is important to commemorate the adversaries that the Ahlul-Bayet (Peace Be Upon Them) experienced on these days in history.
He added that to conjure up a picture of what happened to Imam Hussain and his family such as terrifyingly taking the women and children captive, a man can imagine how they feel if their wife, mother, daughters, and sisters are driven in a topless vehicle to humiliatingly show them to people, while people are standing aside, engaged in schadenfreude over their tragedy, and verbally insulting them, then the whole family is kept in a dilapidated place that doesn’t protect them from cold and heat – in addition, a man can also imagine how they feel if their dearest son is slain, and so are their brothers before their eyes, while he is unable to do anything.
Elkerbela’i advised that it’s important to take advantage of the sorrow for Imam Hussain’s tragedy by practicing the principles that Imam Hussain was martyred for by observing oneself and their patience and steadfastness in facing a crisis, sedition in religion, or when the country goes through an ordeal, or the society is inflicted with corruption, debauchery and an unjust ruler. In addition, he said that one must reconsider what they will do in the face of such tragedy — will they be patient, steadfast, and strengthen their faith in God, Exalted be He, or they will weaken, retreat, and be unsteadfast?
Elkerbela’i mentioned the patience of Lady Zaineb (Peace Be Upon Her) when she had been inflicted with atrocities that would have made the mountains tremble, and how she had remained steadfast in the face of those tyrants. He also called on the Zainebian women to emulate Lady Zaineb and the way she had confronted all the inflictions, ordeals, and crises, and to have faith in God.
A priceless matter, Elkerbela’i touched upon, was to get to know Imam Hussain’s course of life, his ethics, and to study his sayings and analyze them in order to put them to practice and associate them with the principle of enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong.
One of the crucial matters in the society is attracting young people; those presently facing crises: inflictions: and ordeals, and to inspire them with the objectives of Imam Hussain’s revolution and strengthen their faith in Imam Hussain, Elkerbela’i said further.
He indicated that young people have concerns and expectations, and many of them are weak when facing any problem which they fail to resolve, calling for embracing the youth and supporting them, especially when they have issues. He also recommended that young people should learn from the young who sacrificed themselves during the Hussainian revolution and from the young who defended their country by fighting ISIS.
Elkerbela’i concluded, saying that some may think that a young person’s happiness is contingent upon materialistic things, noting that materialistic things are required, but not as much as true happiness, goodness, and progress that are fulfilled by comprehending life that God and Imam Hussain (Peace Be Upon Him) want us to lead.
