The General Secretariat of the Al-Abbas Holy Shrine announced on Friday (20th of Safar 1447 AH), corresponding to (15 August 2025), that a total of 21,103,524 pilgrims participated in the Arbaeen commemoration of Imam Hussain (peace be upon him).
The Al-Abbas Holy Shrine relied on an advanced electronic counting system powered by artificial intelligence to record the number of visitors entering the holy city of Karbala through the main roads and gates of the shrine.
In its official statement, the Holy Shrine conveyed heartfelt condolences:
“We extend our deepest sympathies to the Imam of our time, Al-Hujjah ibn Al-Hasan (may the blessings of God be upon him and his forefathers), to the grand religious authorities, and to the entire Islamic world, especially Iraq, the land of prophets, successors, and saints, on the anniversary of Arbaeen of Imam Hussain (peace be upon him). We pray to Almighty God to protect Muslim countries from every harm and to return the pilgrims of Aba Abdillah Al-Hussain (peace be upon him) safely to their cities and homelands, with their deeds and acts of worship accepted.”
As it has for more than 13 centuries, the holy city of Karbala once again welcomed the visitors of the Master of Martyrs, Imam Hussain, and his brother Aba al-Fadl Al-Abbas (peace be upon them) during this year’s Arbaeen pilgrimage, 1447 AH. The servants of the holy shrines were honored to host and provide pilgrims with a wide range of services, including medical, logistical, and mourning-related support.
Among these services was the documentation of visitor numbers through the electronic counting system managed by the Communications and Information Security Department of the Al-Abbas Holy Shrine, for the tenth consecutive year, as well as analytical and statistical documentation of other services in Karbala carried out by the Al-Kafeel Center for Information and Statistical Studies.
According to this system, which operated with artificial intelligence across five main entrances, (Baghdad–Karbala), (Baghdad–Al-Jamaliya), (Najaf–Karbala), (Babel–Karbala), and (Al-Husayniya–Karbala), the total number of pilgrims who entered Karbala between the 1st of Safar until 6:00 p.m. on the 20th of Safar reached approximately 21,103,524 pilgrims.
