The Warith International Cancer Institute, affiliated with the Health and Medical Education Department at the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, has announced a record milestone in delivering advanced nuclear medicine therapies within Iraq. The foundation has administered over 550 doses of Lutetium-177 (Lu-177) therapy over three years across its specialized centers in the holy provinces of Karbala and Basra.
In an official statement obtained by the shrine's official website, the foundation confirmed that the Warith International Cancer Institute—under the Health and Medical Education Department at the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine—achieved this benchmark after administering more than 550 doses of Lutetium (Lu-177) treatment over a three-year period through its specialized centers in Karbala and Basra.
The statement explained that delivering this volume of doses in three years marks a qualitative leap in nuclear medicine services nationwide. It noted that this figure surpasses what some specialized global hospitals and centers have provided over a full ten years, placing the foundation on par with advanced international facilities utilizing this specialized therapy.
The release highlighted that Lutetium-177 (Lu-177) treatment is among the latest targeted technologies in modern nuclear medicine. It is utilized to treat complex cancer cases, primary among them metastatic prostate tumors resistant to hormonal and chemotherapy, as well as metastatic neuroendocrine tumors.
Furthermore, the statement added that introducing these advanced technologies and expanding their operational efficiency aligns with the directives of the representative of the Supreme Religious Authority, Sheikh Abdul Mahdi Al-Karbalai, and the vision of the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine to alleviate the burden on patients. The goal is to make the latest internationally recognized treatment protocols available inside Iraq, sparing patients the need to travel abroad for care.
It continued that this achievement reflects the foundation's drive toward localizing advanced therapies in Iraq and providing modern treatment options for patients in accordance with approved nuclear medicine protocols.
It is worth noting that the Warith International Cancer Institute at the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine is the first health institution in Iraq to earn Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation, continuing to deliver modern medical and therapeutic services following the highest global health standards.
