Rare Surgery Saves One-Year-Old with Complex Condition at Imam Hussain Holy Shrine Hospital

Al-Sayyida Khadija Al-Kubra Specialized Hospital for Women, affiliated with the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, has announced the success of a rare and specialized surgical procedure performed on a one-year-old child suffering from complex deformities.

In a statement obtained by the official website, the hospital said, “Al-Sayyida Khadija Al-Kubra Specialized Hospital for Women, affiliated with the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, successfully carried out a surgery considered the first of its kind for a child who was suffering from complex congenital abnormalities affecting the urinary and reproductive systems, known as ambiguous genitalia, resulting from adrenal gland enlargement and hormonal imbalance.”

The statement explained that “the operation lasted approximately (5) hours, during which the shared channel between the two systems was separated and the congenital deformities were corrected, along with precise reconstructive procedures, while preserving normal function and proper anatomical structure.”

It added that “this type of surgery requires high precision and advanced expertise due to the complexity and rarity of the condition, reflecting the competence of the medical staff and their ability to handle critical and complex cases.”

This achievement comes as part of a series of medical successes delivered by the healthcare institutions affiliated with the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, underscoring the significant advancement in the level of medical services and reinforcing its position in performing specialized and rare procedures within Iraq.
