Imam Hussain Holy Shrine Treats Child with Complex Brain Vein Malformation

The Al-Hayat Center for Interventional Radiology and Neurocatheterization at the Warith International Cancer Institute, affiliated with the Health and Medical Education Authority at the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, has announced the success of a rare and specialized procedure for a child suffering from a congenital arteriovenous malformation in the brain.

Director of the center, Dr. Ghazwan Alwan Al-Taie, stated in an interview with the official website that “the Al-Hayat Center for Interventional Radiology and Neurocatheterization at the Warith International Cancer Institute, affiliated with the Health and Medical Education Authority at the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, successfully performed a rare catheter-based procedure on a one-and-a-half-year-old child.”

He explained that “the patient was suffering from one of the most dangerous and complex congenital arteriovenous malformations in the brain, known as the Vein of Galen, which can lead to serious complications when enlarged.”

He added that “this procedure is considered among the most high-risk interventions and was carried out through cerebral catheterization via the femoral artery to reach a deep-seated malformation that is difficult to treat surgically. The medical team succeeded in closing the associated vessels, restoring normal blood flow without any complications.”

This achievement comes as part of a series of medical successes delivered by the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine through its healthcare institutions, through which it seeks to provide the best medical services and healthcare to citizens, while offering the latest medical technologies in line with the highest health standards.
