Hospital Saves Patient with Emergency Procedure for Critical Heart Blockage

Imam Zain Al-Abidin Teaching Hospital, affiliated with the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, has announced the success of its medical team in performing a complex emergency catheterization procedure that helped save the life of a patient suffering from one of the most dangerous cardiac conditions associated with high mortality rates.

The hospital’s media officer, Mustafa Al-Mousawi, said in a statement to the official website that “Imam Zain Al-Abidin Teaching Hospital, affiliated with the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, successfully carried out a complex emergency catheterization procedure on a 59-year-old patient,” noting that “the patient was suffering from a severe and rare blockage in the left main coronary artery, one of the most critical cardiac conditions globally due to its high mortality rates.”

He explained that “the patient arrived at the emergency department experiencing severe constrictive chest pain, and after conducting examinations and precise diagnostics, electrocardiogram results revealed a complete blockage at the origin of the left main coronary artery, the main vessel supplying blood to the heart muscle.”

He added that “while preparing for open-heart surgery, the patient’s condition suddenly deteriorated, with a disturbance in heart rhythm, requiring immediate intervention through electrical shocks to revive him,” noting that “the specialized medical team made an urgent decision to proceed with interventional catheterization instead of surgery due to time constraints and the severity of the case.”

He continued that “the medical team successfully reopened the blocked artery and implanted a drug-eluting stent, which restored blood flow and returned the heart’s rhythm to normal.”

This achievement comes as part of a series of successes by Imam Zain Al-Abidin Teaching Hospital, within the efforts of the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine to provide advanced medical services and reduce the need for patients to seek treatment abroad, by offering the latest technologies and specialized medical staff in line with the highest healthcare standards.
