Sayyid Murtadha Al-Kashmiri, the representative of the Supreme Religious Authority in the Americas and Europe, affirmed that Karbala is not simply a geographic city or a historical event, but rather a living message, a renewed renaissance, and a global humanitarian project. He made these remarks during his address at the opening of the 18th International Rabee’ Al-Shahada Cultural Festival at the holy Hussaini Courtyard, attended by the representative of the Supreme Religious Authority, Sheikh Abdul Mahdi Al-Karbalaei, along with religious and academic figures from (50) countries.
The representative of the Supreme Religious Authority in the Americas and Europe stated that “the martyrdom of Imam Hussain and his family (peace be upon them) marked a decisive turning point in the history of the muslim nation”, becoming a model for reform, justice, freedom, and human dignity.”
He explained that “Karbala is not merely a geographic city or a historical event; it is a living message, a renewed uprising, and a global humanitarian project. It has become a spiritual, intellectual, and cultural center for the Shiite world, particularly through the million-strong pilgrimages such as the Arbaeen visit, which has transformed into a civilizational phenomenon reflecting loyalty and belonging to the values of Imam Hussain (peace be upon him).”
He added that “Karbala brings together diverse groups, Shiites, Muslims, and non-Muslims, around the values of justice and human dignity, serving as a platform for human dialogue and convergence around shared humanitarian principles.”
He continued by saying that “reviving the principles of the Hussaini movement is not achieved through commemoration alone, but by translating them into practical standards in our daily lives, such as social justice, confronting oppression, and safeguarding human dignity.”
He noted that “the holy shrines of Imam Hussain and Al-Abbas play an important role in reinforcing this message and transforming Karbala’s status into a sustainable project through unifying discourse and support for cultural initiatives and dialogue among peoples and sects.”
He further stated that “the efforts exerted by Sheikh Abdul Mahdi Al-Karbalaei are significant, and he is a man who has devoted himself and his time to serving religion, belief, and the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine.”
He pointed out that “following the Pope’s visit to the Supreme Religious Authority, the world has begun to pay attention to the Supreme Religious Authority, Sayyid Ali Al-Husseini Al-Sistani. Shiite identity has since become a subject of global interest, with people raising questions about Shiites and their religious authorities.”
The activities of the 18th International Rabee’ Al-Shahada Cultural Festival were launched at the holy Hussaini Courtyard with the participation of (50) Arab and foreign countries and broad attendance by religious and academic figures. The festival includes research sessions on the life of Imam Hussain (peace be upon him), in addition to the opening of the 20th session of the Karbala International Book Fair.
