Covering main entrance to East gate of Imam Hussein Shrine with sand to facilitate pilgrims' traffic

Within the preparations Imam Hussein Shrine has made is covering the path extending from the main gate of Imam Hussein Shrine to the East gate with sand.

It is ti facilitate the traffic of mourning pilgrims who perform a Husseinian ritual known as “Rekdhet Twereej,” which is a large number of mourning pilgrims run from the outskirts of Kerbela into Imam Hussein and then into El-Abbas Shrine; it is to express that if these people had been at the time when Imam Hussein, his family, and his companions had been surrounded by the tyrannical army, they would have run to rescue them and sacrifice themselves for them.

Millions of pilgrims perform this ritual on the tenth of the month of Muharram every single year.
