Al-Thaqalain Cancer Hospital in Basra, affiliated with the Health and Medical Education Authority of the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, has announced the successful completion of a complex and specialized surgical procedure to remove a recurrent tumor extending through the left chest wall of a child aged (10 years), utilizing highly skilled medical personnel and advanced technologies.
In a statement obtained by the official website, the hospital said that "Al-Thaqalain Oncology Hospital in Basra, affiliated with the Health and Medical Education Authority of the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, successfully performed a complex and specialized surgical procedure to remove a recurrent tumor extending through the left chest wall of a child aged (10 years), utilizing highly skilled medical personnel and advanced technologies."
The statement explained that "the operation is classified among procedures that present a significant surgical challenge due to the extent of the tumor’s spread, which involved the skin, subcutaneous tissue, and chest wall muscles. The tumor was completely removed, after which the affected area was reconstructed using a musculocutaneous flap taken from the back to replace the excised tissue and repair the chest wall."
It added that "this medical success was achieved through the combined efforts of the hospital’s medical teams," noting that "the operation was carried out through close coordination and high-level cooperation between the thoracic surgery team and the oncology surgery team, and the child was discharged from the operating room in good health and stable condition."
This new medical achievement reflects the exceptional efforts undertaken by the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine through Al-Thaqalain Cancer Hospital and its other healthcare institutions, which aim to provide the latest medical technologies and the most qualified surgical teams within Iraq in order to ease the burden on patients’ families, particularly children, and deliver treatment services comparable to those offered by leading international medical centers.
