The Health and Medical Education Authority of the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine announced plans to establish the world’s largest integrated bone marrow transplant project in terms of capacity and comprehensiveness.
Head of the authority, Dr. Haider Al-Abadi, said in a statement to the official website that “the Health and Medical Education Authority of the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine has developed a plan to establish the world’s largest project of its kind for bone marrow transplantation in terms of capacity and integration.”
He explained that “the project will have a capacity of (100) transplant units to cover various types of transplant procedures, including autologous and allogeneic transplants, in addition to cellular therapies according to the latest international medical standards.”
He added that “this project is considered one of the specialized initiatives that has no equivalent in terms of size and integration, which will significantly contribute to meeting the needs of a large segment of patients whose treatment requires this type of delicate and complex procedure.”
He further stated that “through this project, the authority seeks to reduce the need for patients to travel abroad for treatment, ultimately achieving self-sufficiency in this advanced medical field.”
He pointed to “ongoing cooperation with the main bone marrow transplant center at Baghdad Medical City,” noting that “the current centers in Iraq represent an important foundation, but the ambition is directed toward developing this sector in a way that meets the actual needs of patients.”
He also noted that “one of the project’s most prominent features is the effort to obtain an internationally recognized accreditation certificate in the field of bone marrow transplantation,” stressing that “the number of centers in the Arab region holding this certification is very limited, and we seek for the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine center to be among these accredited centers due to the high level of reliability it provides in conducting procedures according to international standards.”
It is worth noting that the authority continues to implement specialized healthcare projects aimed at advancing the medical sector in Iraq and providing the best treatment services to patients either free of charge or at subsidized prices, in line with the vision of the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine in serving the community.
