Rare Twin Case Successfully Treated in Iraq by Imam Hussain Holy Shrine

The Warith International Cancer Institute, affiliated with the Health and Medical Education Authority at the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, has announced its success in treating a case considered among the rarest globally involving twin children.

In a statement obtained by the official website, the authority said that “the Warith International Cancer Institute, affiliated with the Health and Medical Education Authority at the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, has successfully treated a case regarded as one of the rarest worldwide involving twin children,” noting that “the twins arrived at the Warith International Cancer Institute at the age of (7) months, suffering from a rare condition identified as (synchronous myeloid leukemia associated with Down syndrome), a condition documented in global medical literature but unprecedented in Iraq.”

It explained that “the challenge was not limited to the rarity of the case, but also its complexity, as the young age of the twins meant that their vital systems were still developing, while Down syndrome increased the body’s sensitivity to chemotherapy, in addition to the fact that they are twins, which required each case to be managed independently according to a specialized treatment plan.”

It added that “the medical team did not rely on previous local experiences, but instead worked on developing a dedicated treatment protocol based on close monitoring and continuous evaluation, while maintaining a precise balance between treatment effectiveness and the children’s ability to tolerate it.”

The statement continued that “the medical team carefully calculated each treatment dose and made medical decisions based on precise scientific analysis and high-level specialized expertise.”

It pointed out that “these efforts were crowned with success, as the twins recovered and were discharged from the institute in good health to return to their family, in a story that began with great concern and ended with positive results.”

It is worth noting that treatment for children under the age of (15) is provided free of charge, supported by the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine through the (Warith Fund), as part of its humanitarian commitment to delivering advanced healthcare to sick children and restoring them to their normal lives among their families.
