The Maintenance Unit of the Imam Hussain Museum Department at the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine has announced that the museum holds the largest carpet collection among the holy shrines, noting that the number of rare carpets exceeds 10,000.
The head of the unit, Mr. Hasnain Rahman Abdullah, said in a statement to the official website that “the Imam Hussain Museum at the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine possesses the largest carpet collection among the holy shrines, with more than 10,000 rare carpets.”
He explained that “these carpets vary in terms of the materials used in their production, with some made of silk, others of wool, and additional examples crafted from pile,” noting that “the museum displays selected pieces to visitors coming from within Iraq and abroad.”
He added that “the museum has provided all suitable conditions to preserve this rare carpet collection, with continuous and regular monitoring to protect it from external factors that may affect its elegance and beauty.”
He continued that “the administration of the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine has supported the development of staff skills by involving them in specialized training courses inside and outside Iraq, with the aim of preserving this important heritage and presenting it in a manner befitting visitors.”
He pointed out that “the carpet collection at the Imam Hussain Museum is not merely a set of rare items, but represents a living archive of Islamic textile and decorative arts across different eras, giving it cultural and historical value beyond that of a traditional museum collection.”
The Imam Hussain Museum Department at the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine places special emphasis on preserving these heritage treasures by adopting modern scientific methods in maintenance and restoration, in addition to providing an ideal storage environment that ensures their sustainability for future generations. It also seeks to present these items in a refined manner that introduces visitors to the cultural and artistic heritage associated with the history of the holy shrines.
