Hassan Rashid Jawad Al-Abayji, Secretary-General of the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, confirmed that work is continuing on the Karbala International Airport project, noting that one of the most important components at this stage is the development of green spaces, public gardens, and landscaping works.
The Secretary-General stated that “the working teams are continuing their efforts on the Karbala International Airport project by advancing one of the key components of the current phase, namely the implementation of green areas, public gardens, and landscaping works, given their significant role in highlighting the airport’s aesthetic identity and their positive impact on travelers and visitors.”
He explained that “extensive meetings are being held on an ongoing basis to follow up on this aspect,” adding that “the green spaces within the project cover approximately 120 dunams and extend for nearly 18 kilometers. Trees will be planted along both sides of the roads, totaling up to 1,500 trees, in addition to shrubs planted in the central medians, numbering around 1,500,000 shrubs, all designed with modern and attractive layouts that reflect a civilized image of the airport.”
He added that “the project includes the construction of three main fountains, along with a 250-meter-long waterfall that will serve as a striking aesthetic feature, providing travelers with a sense of comfort and tranquility as they move through the airport.”
He noted that “the gardens will be complemented by an extensive lighting system with distinctive artistic designs. A section of approximately one kilometer has already been completed on both sides of the road, featuring elegant lighting that clearly reflects the level of attention given to the airport’s visual appeal.”
He continued, saying that “these works will make Karbala International Airport a prominent landmark at the level of the holy city of Karbala and Iraq as a whole.”
Al-Abayji emphasized that “the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine continues to coordinate with project supervisors to implement all garden and landscaping components according to contemporary designs, ensuring they appear in a manner befitting the stature of Karbala.”
The Karbala International Airport project is considered one of the vital strategic projects being implemented by the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine. It aims to strengthen the aviation infrastructure in Karbala Province and accommodate the growing influx of visitors from within Iraq and abroad, particularly during major pilgrimage seasons.
