From the far south of Iraq, where endurance meets hardship, Al-Thaqalayn Oncology Hospital in Basra, affiliated with the Health and Medical Education Authority of the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, stands as a new beacon of hope. It delivers a humanitarian mission that transcends medicine, following the recent launch of some of the world’s most advanced cancer diagnosis and treatment systems, as part of a free treatment initiative extending through the end of the year.
The hospital’s Head of Biomedical Engineering, Engineer Redha Ali, told the official website that “the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine aimed, through Al-Thaqalayn Hospital, to transform southern Iraq into a center of healing rather than suffering. The hospital has been equipped with the latest medical systems in the region, making it a fully integrated cancer treatment center, not merely a waiting room for pain.”
He explained that the hospital includes a comprehensive network of specialized departments, such as radiation therapy, nuclear medicine, radiology, intensive care, surgery, emergency, laboratory, and chemotherapy, each designed to deliver medical care on par with leading international centers.
According to Ali, the radiation therapy department is one of the most advanced in Iraq, featuring a Linear Accelerator equipped with Virgin RT technology, which precisely targets tumors while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissues. “This technology,” he added, “is currently available only at Al-Thaqalayn Hospital and Al-Warith International Hospital, both affiliated with the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine.”
He further noted that the hospital is equipped with specialized devices such as HDR Brachytherapy and CT Simulator, while the nuclear medicine department houses PET Scan, SPECT CT, and a Cyclotron for the local production of radioactive isotopes, significantly reducing waiting times and improving treatment accuracy.
Ali also highlighted that the radiology department includes state-of-the-art imaging systems, including MRI, CT Scan, Ultrasound, and Mammography, forming a complete diagnostic network that enables early detection, where every minute can make a difference in a patient’s life.
He pointed out that the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is equipped with isolation rooms and advanced resuscitation systems, along with fully equipped ambulances featuring integrated medical monitoring systems for the safe transport of critical patients.
In a statement carrying deep humanitarian sentiment, Ali expressed gratitude to the Representative of the Supreme Religious Authority, Sheikh Abdul-Mahdi Al-Karbalaey, for sponsoring this initiative. “This program has made free cancer treatment a human right for low-income patients. It’s not just about providing medication, it’s about standing beside the patient, giving hope, and reminding them they are not alone,” he said.
He concluded by emphasizing that Al-Thaqalayn Hospital is more than a medical facility. “It represents a promise to put humanity first. The care offered by the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine restores patients’ dignity before restoring their health. Here, medicine is practiced not only through technology but through compassion.”
The Al-Thaqalayn Oncology Hospital in Basra exemplifies humanitarian medicine at its finest, turning treatment into a message of hope and reaffirming the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine’s unwavering commitment to serving humanity.
