Every year, on the 15th of Shawal month A.H., Muslims commemorate the event of the sun retrograding for Imam Ali (Peace Be Upon Him) and his companions.
Narrations by the Ahlul-Bayet (Peace Be Upon Them) tell that God the Almighty caused the sun to retrograde two times for Imam Ali (Peace Be Upon Him) and his companions:
The first time happened on the day of Shura, the Prophet Mohammed (God’s Blessings Be Upon Him and His Pure Family) laid his head on Imam Ali’s lap and slept until the sun went down, when he woke up, he asked Imam Ali if he prayed, Imam Ali replied that he did not pray. The Prophet supplicated to God, saying, “Oh God, cause the sun to retrograde for Imam Ali, for he has been serving You and Your messenger.”
The second time, it happened during the life of the Prophet Mohammed (God’s Blessings Be Upon Him and His Pure Family), and the second time happened after his death. The first time, it happened when Imam Ali (Peace Be Upon Him) and his companions were walking across a cursed piece of land, after they walked across the cursed piece of land, it is dark and the sun went down completely. Imam Ali (Peace Be Upon Him) asked the Almighty God to cause the sun to retrograde in order for him and his companions to pray. God answered Imam Ali’s supplication and caused the sun to retrograde, Imam Ali (Peace Be Upon Him) and his companions established their prayer then.
