Lasting 8 Hours.. Warith International Cancer Institution at Imam Hussain Holy Shrine Successfully Performs Two Simultaneous Surgeries for Tumor Resection and Reconstruction on a 30-Year-Old Patient

Warith International Cancer Institution, affiliated with Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, announced the success of its medical team in conducting two complex, simultaneous surgical procedures for a 30-year-old female patient. The operations lasted eight continuous hours and involved a bilateral mastectomy with immediate breast reconstruction, alongside a preventive oophorectomy (removal of ovaries) to mitigate the risk of tumors associated with a genetic mutation.

Speaking to the Official Website, Dr. Salam Al-Sarhan, Consultant Breast Surgeon at the foundation, stated, "The patient visited the foundation, and following necessary medical examinations, she was diagnosed with left breast cancer. Given her young age, advanced genetic testing was conducted, revealing a genetic mutation in the BRCA1 gene, which is associated with an elevated risk of developing breast and ovarian cancers."

He explained that "the surgical team reviewed the case during the multidisciplinary medical meeting and discussed treatment options with the patient and her family. The decision was made to perform a total mastectomy of the affected breast, a prophylactic mastectomy of the other breast with immediate bilateral reconstruction, as well as a laparoscopic preventive oophorectomy in collaboration with the gynecologic oncology surgical team."

For his part, Dr. Rabee Hanna, Consultant Gynecologic Oncologist, noted that "carrying the BRCA1 gene mutation is linked to a higher risk of developing ovarian cancer, where the risk level can reach between 50% and 60%. Meanwhile, preventive removal of the ovaries contributes to reducing this risk to below 5%, according to the medical evaluation of the case."

He added that "joint coordination between the breast surgery and gynecologic oncology teams, in cooperation with the anesthesia team, enabled performing both surgeries in a single surgical session under a single anesthesia. This spared the patient the need for repeated procedures and anesthesia," noting that "the operation was crowned with success, and the patient was discharged from the hospital in good health."

This step comes as part of the efforts by Imam Hussain Holy Shrine to support its healthcare institutions and equip them with modern medical technologies and equipment, alongside providing specialized medical personnel capable of handling complex cases, thereby contributing to elevating the standard of healthcare services provided to patients from various Iraqi governorates.
