Al-Mujtaba Hospital for Hematology and Bone Marrow Transplantation, affiliated with the Health and Medical Education Authority at the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, announced its success in conducting Iraq's first rare bone marrow transplant for a child suffering from Fanconi anemia.
In a statement to the official website, Hospital Director Dr. Muayyad Al-Janabi said, "Al-Mujtaba Hospital for Hematology and Bone Marrow Transplantation, affiliated with the Health and Medical Education Authority at the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, succeeded in performing the first rare bone marrow transplant for a child with Fanconi anemia at the national level in Iraq."
He explained that "the procedure was performed entirely at the expense of the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, at a cost of $60,000," noting that "the Shrine is also committed to providing free medical examinations and follow-up care for the child for a full year to ensure the stability of his condition and complete recovery."
He added that "this achievement comes as part of the Shrine's ongoing initiatives to support the healthcare sector, as the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine covers 99% of surgical procedure costs designated for children free of charge and in full, relieving families of heavy treatment burdens."
He further noted that "the successive successes achieved by the hospital's medical staff have driven service expansion, following directives from the representative of the Supreme Religious Authority, Sheikh Abdul-Mahdi al-Karbalai, to establish the world's largest specialized bone marrow transplant center with a 100-bed capacity."
In a related context, Dr. Intisar Al-Shammari, a bone marrow transplant specialist at the hospital, stated that "the child, Sajjad, from Al-Muthanna Governorate, was suffering from bone marrow failure resulting from genetic Fanconi syndrome and was completely dependent on blood and platelet transfusions."
She confirmed that "undergoing the transplant operation and replacing the diseased marrow with a healthy one will restore normal blood cell production, granting him the opportunity to live a normal life like any child after recovery."
