Al-Sayyida Zainab Eye Center Saves Child’s Sight from Permanent Loss

With the support of Imam Hussain Holy Shrine and in cooperation with the Karbala Health Directorate, Al-Sayyida Zainab Al-Kubra Eye Center successfully performed a complex and specialized surgery on a child who was at risk of permanent vision loss due to retinopathy of prematurity.

Specialist Dr. Hamza Sadiq Al-Shuraifi told the official website that “with the support of the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine and in cooperation with the Karbala Health Directorate, Al-Sayyida Zainab Al-Kubra Center, through its medical team, successfully carried out a complex and specialized surgical procedure for a child who faced the risk of permanent vision loss as a result of retinopathy of prematurity.”

He explained that “the child was suffering from retinal detachment caused by retinopathy of prematurity in both eyes and was in a very advanced stage. The right eye was at stage four (B), while the left eye had reached stage five. The family had completely lost hope after consulting several doctors and centers across different governorates, all of whom informed them that the child had permanent blindness.”

He added that “the medical team diagnosed the condition immediately upon arrival and decided on urgent surgical intervention. The required operations were performed on both eyes in stages. The first procedure involved treating the first eye, followed by a washout due to minor bleeding, after which surgery on the second eye was successfully completed.” He stressed that “medical examinations and imaging conducted two weeks after the surgery showed a (100%) successful outcome from both the surgical and functional perspectives, and the child began responding and interacting visually with family members.”

He pointed out that “the center is proud today of its ability to perform such complex and rare surgeries inside Iraq, whereas the previous practice within the Ministry of Health relied on medical evacuation and sending such cases abroad, or bringing in foreign teams.” He noted that “global success rates in such advanced cases do not exceed (20%), but by the grace of God we achieved complete success in this case, which is the third of its kind at our center.”

He continued that “this major achievement would not have been possible without the continuous and unlimited support of the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine and the center’s administration in providing the latest advanced medical equipment,” praising the exceptional efforts of the nursing, support, and anesthesia teams that contributed to this success.

This operation highlights the significant progress being witnessed in Iraq’s medical sector and its growing ability to spare citizens the burden of travel and high treatment costs.
