The Health and Medical Education Authority of the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine participated in the third AGILE DxRx Conference, dedicated to the early detection of lung cancer and chest diseases, held in the city of Gdansk in Poland. The event brought together leading experts and researchers from around the world, reflecting Iraq’s active scientific presence and its continued engagement with the latest developments in the medical field.
Dr. Ahmed Salem Al-Khafaji, chief supervisor of the Iraq Healthy Lung Project, said in a statement to the official website that “the Health and Medical Education Authority of the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine took part in the third AGILE DxRx Conference, which focuses on early detection of lung cancer and chest diseases, held in Gdansk, Poland, with the participation of top experts and researchers from across the globe,” noting that “this participation reflects Iraq’s scientific presence and its ongoing alignment with the latest medical advancements.”
He explained that “during the conference, the experience of the IHLP project was presented, which represents the first organized national program in Iraq based on targeted early screening using risk factors and low-dose computed tomography (LDCT), implemented within a resource-limited healthcare environment, marking a qualitative step that highlights the development of preventive health programs in the country.”
He added that “initial results of the project showed that approximately 32% of beneficiaries from the free screenings provided by the authority were classified as high-risk, and were referred for advanced CT scans according to the latest risk assessment standards and structured clinical pathways, contributing to improved chances of early detection and reduced mortality rates associated with the disease.”
He pointed out that “the program received scientific documentation in the Journal of Thoracic Oncology, one of the leading global journals specializing in thoracic cancers, reflecting the importance and credibility of the Iraqi experience at the international level, with the potential to be adopted as a successful model in countries with limited resources.”
This participation underscores the growing presence of the Health and Medical Education Authority of the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine in international scientific forums and its role in adopting evidence-based medical innovation, while strengthening Iraq’s position on the global research map through the development of leading national programs that contribute to improving public health and advancing practices in early detection and control of lung cancer.
