Iraq’s First Hybrid Surgery Center Approved by Al-Karbalai

The Health and Medical Education Authority affiliated with the Imam Hussein Holy Shrine has announced the initiation of procedures to establish a specialized Hybrid Surgery Center, following approval by the Representative of the Supreme Religious Authority, Sheikh Abdul Mahdi Al-Karbalai. The move is considered one of the advanced medical projects that integrates modern technologies with specialized expertise.

In a statement obtained by the official website, the Authority said that “the Health and Medical Education Authority affiliated with the Imam Hussein Holy Shrine has received approval from the Representative of the Supreme Religious Authority, Sheikh Abdul Mahdi Al-Karbalai, to establish a specialized Hybrid Surgery Center. This step represents one of the advanced medical projects that combines modern technologies and specialized expertise, contributing to the development of healthcare services provided to patients inside Iraq.”

It explained that “the Hybrid Surgery Center (ARLES) represents an advanced medical model that integrates robotic surgery with minimally invasive endoscopic interventions, enabling complex procedures to be performed with greater precision and reduced surgical intervention, while achieving safer therapeutic outcomes for patients.”

The statement added that “the center will utilize advanced technologies including robotic surgery, minimally invasive surgery, advanced endoscopy, three-dimensional imaging techniques, and surgical navigation systems, thereby enhancing diagnostic and treatment accuracy while reducing complications and recovery periods.”

It further noted that “among the key applications offered by the center are advanced endoscopic tumor resections (ESD), treatment of certain cases of achalasia using (POEM) technology, full-thickness resection procedures, submucosal tunneling, early tumor removal without open surgery, combined surgical and endoscopic procedures (LECS-type) for complex cases, and precise interventions for gastrointestinal tumors, liver tumors, pelvic tumors, and delicate lymph node surgeries.”

The statement emphasized that “the advantages and benefits of this advanced surgical model include minimizing the extent of surgical intervention, increasing safety levels, and achieving precise control over resection margins, which positively impacts recovery rates and accelerates patient healing.”

It pointed out that “this project represents a qualitative leap in specialized medicine and is the first of its kind in Iraq, as it relies on an advanced therapeutic model available only in a limited number of global centers, placing the healthcare institutions affiliated with the Imam Hussein Holy Shrine among modern medical centers.”

The establishment of the Hybrid Surgery Center aligns with the vision of the Imam Hussein Holy Shrine to localize advanced medical technologies within Iraq and to build a specialized healthcare system capable of delivering high-quality treatment services, reducing the need for patients to travel abroad for care and enhancing Iraq’s position as a regional hub for advanced healthcare.
