Al-Thaqalayn Oncology Hospital in Basra Governorate, affiliated with the Health and Medical Education Authority at the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, announced a medical achievement described as the first of its kind in Iraq, marked by the successful treatment of a patient with skin cancer using total skin superficial radiation therapy.
In a statement to the official website, Dr. Fatima Ahmed, Head of the Radiotherapy Department at the hospital, said that “Al-Thaqalayn Oncology Hospital in Basra Governorate, affiliated with the Health and Medical Education Authority at the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, has successfully treated a patient with skin cancer using total skin radiation therapy (Total Skin Radiation),” noting that “this achievement is the first of its kind at the national level in Iraq.”
She explained that “the patient had previously undergone chemotherapy for three years without achieving any significant benefit.”
She added that “the medical team conducted all necessary clinical examinations and precise physical calculations in accordance with established scientific principles and internationally approved standards to achieve this successful outcome.”
For his part, medical physicist Islam Tareq stated that “this type of treatment relies on designing a comprehensive and highly precise treatment plan that ensures full delivery of radiation doses to the patient’s skin.”
He added that “this technique opens a door of hope for skin cancer patients within Iraq, as it represents a qualitative leap in the level of specialized radiotherapy.”
