Imam Al-Mujtaba Hospital for Hematology and Bone Marrow Transplantation, affiliated with the Health and Medical Education Authority of the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, has achieved major medical and humanitarian milestones by performing more than 235 bone marrow transplants for adults and children since its establishment.
Hospital Director Dr. Muayyad Hamid Al-Janabi told the official website that the hospital “continues to fulfill its humanitarian and medical mission by providing free treatment and care for blood disorders and cancer patients, both children and adults.”
He added that the hospital has so far carried out over 235 bone marrow transplant procedures, including a significant number of thalassemia patients. This year alone, around 74 transplants were performed for adults and 14 for children, all of the pediatric procedures fully covered by the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine. The Shrine has also covered the costs of unrelated (allogeneic) transplants for adult patients.
Dr. Al-Janabi further noted that the hospital does not limit its services to bone marrow transplants alone. It also offers free cancer treatment for children under the age of 15, stating that the estimated cost of treating pediatric cancer patients in 2024 exceeded 2,700,000,000 Iraqi dinars, fully funded by the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine.
The hospital also includes an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) dedicated to critical cases, with the Shrine covering most of the treatment expenses for patients admitted.
He explained that the hospital is considered one of the most important specialized medical centers in Iraq after the Bone Marrow Transplant Center in Baghdad. It continues to expand its bone marrow transplant program for thalassemia patients, having successfully carried out four procedures as part of this initiative, with plans for further expansion to serve more patients.
The continuous provision of free medical services for blood and cancer patients by Imam Al-Mujtaba Hospital reflects the humanitarian vision of the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine and its enduring commitment to patient care and support for the healthcare sector in Iraq.
