Supreme Religious Authority: Day of Ashura still repeated, people like Imam Hussain and Yazeed still exist

Friday, September 21, 2018, the representative of the Shia Muslim Supreme Religious Authority, sayyid Ahmed Essafi, delivered the Friday’s sermon at the Imam Hussain Shrine in which he talked about Ashura battle at which two parties met: Imam Hussain (Peace Be Upon Him), and Yazeed and his army; the enemy.

He said, “’If you cognize truth, you shall recognize its people.’ It is important to memorize this motto, for cognizing truth enables one to know the loftiest principles.”

Essafi also said: “Imam Hussain (Peace Be Upon Him) met his enemy in Kerbela on the Day of Ashura. His enemy wanted to kill him, although they knew who he was. Despite the fact that Imam Hussain (Peace Be Upon Him) did not need to introduce himself, for he was well-known for his bravery, loyalty, and being bound to truth, but he introduced himself to leave them no excuse. However, the enemy did not want to listen to any advice from even a sympathetic mentor like Imam Hussain (Peace Be Upon Him).”

He narrated, “The Imam – on the Day of Ashura – loudly cried his name, his father’s name, and grandfather’s name—the Messenger of God, in order to remind everyone and tell them who he was, saying, ‘You can ask some of your men, such as Abi Se’eed Elkhedri and Sehel Bin Se’ed, so they tell you who I am,’ stating that there was no-one whose grandfather was the Messenger of God but him.”

Essafi added that the Imam asked his enemy why they attended to fight him—they alleged they wanted to fight him due to their hatred for his father, Imam Ali (Peace Be Upon Him).

“The enemy cursed Imam Ali (Peace Be Upon Him) for many years, while they knew he was a righteous patron. They also told Imam Hussain (Peace Be Upon Him) they wanted to kill him because he refused to pledge allegiance to Yazeed the tyrant,” added further Essafi.

He mentioned that Imam Hussain (Peace Be Upon Him) – through talking to his enemy – tried to save those who then murdered him, but they were stubborn enough not to listen to the Imam, and then tried  to convince Elabbas – Imam Hussain’s brother – (Peace Be Upon Him) to leave Imam Hussain, for Elabbas was the nephew of some of the enemy army leaders.

Essafi then said, “What pushed the enemy to kill Imam Hussain (Peace Be Upon Him) and his infant was that they were utterly cowards and ignorant. And such people are available in this day and age—they are cowards, indulged in fleshly desires and self-interests, and never take any advice; such individuals are cursed in life and the hereafter.”

His eminence gave an example, saying, “Being cognizant of truth is crucial. When ISIS invaded part of Iraq, millions of Iraqis immediately responded to the Shia Muslim Supreme Religious Authority’s edict of picking up arms against ISIS, fought them, and gained victory over them—they did not need to find out if it was right to fight ISIS and lay their lives for their country, because they were cognizant of truth."

Essafi concluded, saying, “It is absolutely important to practice the Hussainian rites and religious observances, for they not only remind us of who the Prince of martyrs, Imam Hussain, (Peace Be Upon Him) is, but also cleanse ourselves in order to avoid getting indulged in this transient world.”
