The Al-Hayat Specialized Center, affiliated with the Warith International Foundation for Cancer Treatment under the Health and Medical Education Authority at the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, has announced its success in halting the activity of malignant retinoblastoma in an Algerian child. The treatment involved three catheterization procedures designed to deliver chemotherapy directly into the blood vessels feeding the tumor, addressing a medical intervention currently unavailable in her home country of Algeria.
Dr. Aseel Rasheed, a pediatric hematologist and oncologist, stated in an interview with the official website that "the child, Batool, had received 12 doses of chemotherapy in Algeria before visiting the center for specialized treatment." She explained that "her condition necessitated the use of intra-arterial chemotherapy catheterization directly into the eye artery, a technique that is unavailable in Algeria."
She added that "the medical team performed three catheterization procedures on the child to inject the chemotherapeutic agent in order to control the tumor."
For her part, Dr. Khitam Al-Hassan, a pediatric ophthalmology specialist at Ibn Al-Haitham Hospital, said that "the child consulted her about five months ago suffering from malignant retinoblastoma in both eyes." She noted that "one of her eyes had previously been removed in Algeria, while the other eye suffered from an active tumor despite retaining good visual acuity."
She added that "the child had received treatments to control the disease, but the tumor remained active, requiring recourse to intra-arterial chemotherapy catheterization—a specialized procedure that was not available in her country." She explained that "the medical examination confirmed her need for this type of therapeutic intervention."
Dr. Al-Hassan pointed out that "the catheterization treatment was successfully performed at the Al-Hayat Center, and the tumor showed a strong response until it became completely inactive," emphasizing that "the condition requires continuous periodic follow-ups to monitor developments and assess stability."
This achievement comes as part of the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine's ongoing efforts to provide specialized medical treatments for children and to leverage modern medical technology in addressing complex cases, thereby improving therapeutic outcomes and preserving visual function.
