Imam Zain Al-Abidin Hospital, affiliated with the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, has announced the successful diagnosis and surgical treatment of an extremely rare medical condition involving a 20-year-old woman suffering from an ectopic pregnancy that progressed to the 15th week, before being successfully removed via laparoscopic surgery while fully preserving the uterus.
Speaking to the Official Website, Dr. Zainab Murtada, Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the hospital, stated that "the patient visited the hospital during her first pregnancy, following a prior diagnosis at another hospital indicating fetal death at 4 months, approximately 10 days before her evaluation here."
She added that "thorough examinations and ultrasound scans conducted at the hospital revealed that the uterus was completely empty, alongside the presence of an abnormal mass outside its boundaries."
Dr. Murtada explained that "the medical team immediately performed an abdominal laparoscopic procedure to investigate the nature of the mass, revealing the presence of an accessory uterine wall on the outer surface of the uterus, housing a deceased fetus at 4 months of gestational age."
She pointed out that "this condition is considered exceptionally rare in obstetrics and gynecology, falling under uncommon anomalies affecting around 1% of women," noting that "what makes this case even rarer is the continuation of the pregnancy to an advanced stage of 15 weeks without uterine rupture."
She confirmed that "the mass was successfully excised while preserving the uterus, sparing the patient severe health complications."
