Qualitative Breakthrough: Al-Hayat Center for Interventional Radiology and Brain Catheterization at Imam Hussain Holy Shrine Successfully Treats Complex Liver Tumor in 50-Year-Old Patient

Al-Hayat Center for Interventional Radiology and Brain Catheterization, affiliated with the Warith International Cancer Institute under the Health and Medical Education Authority at the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, has announced the success of a complex, specialized procedure to treat a liver tumor focus in a 50-year-old patient using interventional radiology techniques and direct catheterization, eliminating the need for conventional surgery.

Interventional Radiology Consultant Dr. Khalil Abdul-Karim stated in an interview with the official website that "the patient had a prior history of breast cancer and underwent a surgical resection. During routine follow-up examinations, limited metastasis was detected, manifested as a tumor focus in the fourth segment of the liver and another in the lung. A decision was made to adopt direct catheterization and thermal ablation techniques to manage the condition."

He explained that "the difficulty of the procedure stemmed from the location of the liver tumor, as it was contiguous with the diaphragm and located extremely close to the cardiac wall. This required high precision in guiding the catheter into the center of the tumor utilizing CT scanning (computed tomography) to ensure accurate access to the targeted area."

He added that "the operation was conducted in direct coordination with the anesthesiologist, with continuous monitoring of the patient's heart rate and rhythm, while controlling and pausing the thermal ablation process as necessary. This ensured precise targeting of the tumor focus while minimizing the likelihood of complications. The procedure culminated in success, and the patient's condition has stabilized."

This operation adds to a series of medical successes achieved by healthcare institutions affiliated with the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, reflecting their effort to harness modern therapeutic and interventional technologies to provide specialized medical services for complex cases inside Iraq.
