Breakthrough Endoscopic Heart Valve Surgery Performed in Iraq

Imam Zain Al-Abidin Teaching Hospital, affiliated with the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, has announced the successful completion of an advanced and specialized surgical procedure to replace an aortic valve in a (36)-year-old patient using an advanced mechanical valve through endoscopic surgical technology.

In a statement obtained by the official website, the hospital said that “Imam Zain Al-Abidin Teaching Hospital, affiliated with the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, successfully carried out an advanced and specialized surgical procedure to replace the aortic valve of a (36)-year-old patient using an advanced mechanical valve through endoscopic surgical technology.” It noted that “the significance of this achievement lies in completing the procedure entirely without the need for a traditional sternotomy, representing a major advancement in the field of open-heart surgery within the country.”

The statement explained that “the patient was suffering from severe and critical aortic valve stenosis, which posed a threat to his life and limited his ability to carry out daily activities, necessitating urgent and highly precise surgical intervention to save his life.”

It added that “the operation was performed through a small lateral incision measuring no more than (5 cm) beneath the right armpit, allowing the medical team to precisely access the heart between the ribs and successfully replace the valve.” The statement noted that “the use of endoscopic surgical technology provided the medical team with highly detailed and magnified visual guidance during the procedure, directly contributing to the protection of surrounding tissues and reducing post-operative pain compared to conventional surgeries.”

It further stated that “the adoption of these modern techniques reduces bleeding and recovery time, enabling the patient to leave the hospital and return to normal life in a short period with the fewest possible complications.”

This successful operation underscores the leadership of Imam Zain Al-Abidin Teaching Hospital and its continued commitment to adopting the latest global surgical technologies and providing high-quality medical services that enhance patient safety and improve treatment outcomes under the umbrella of the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine.
