The Health and Medical Education Authority at the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine announced the successful completion of its tenth specialized and unique pediatric allogeneic bone marrow transplant, carried out through an advanced and integrated treatment program at Imam Al-Mujtaba Hospital for Blood Diseases and Bone Marrow Transplantation in Karbala.
Head of the authority, Dr. Haider Hamza Al-Abadi, said that “the Health and Medical Education Authority at the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine successfully performed the tenth specialized and unique pediatric allogeneic bone marrow transplant as part of an advanced integrated treatment program through Imam Al-Mujtaba Hospital for Blood Diseases and Bone Marrow Transplantation in Karbala.”
He explained that “this procedure is among the delicate and complex operations that require advanced medical capabilities and continuous healthcare.”
He added that “most of the children underwent intensive treatment programs for nearly a full year before the operation, at costs exceeding (100) million Iraqi dinars for each child, in addition to the transplant procedure itself, which costs more than (50) million Iraqi dinars, alongside medical follow-up and periodic examinations that will continue for several years.”
He continued that “these efforts come in order to save the lives of children who had no real chance of recovery without bone marrow transplantation,” stressing that “the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine continues to provide these operations completely free of charge and at its own expense in support of sick children and their families.”
He pointed out that “the treatment program is not limited to performing the operation itself, but also includes diagnosis stages, preparatory treatment, and close post-transplant follow-up under the supervision of specialized medical and nursing teams according to the latest internationally approved treatment protocols.”
These specialized operations come as part of the major expansion witnessed by the medical institutions affiliated with the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine in the field of treating blood diseases and bone marrow transplantation, especially for children suffering from serious and complex illnesses, through the provision of the latest treatment technologies and the recruitment of specialized medical expertise, contributing to reducing the need for travel outside Iraq and easing the heavy financial burden.
