Imam Hussain Holy Shrine Health Authority Performs Advanced Tumor Procedure in Record Time

The Al-Hayat Center for Interventional Radiology and Neuro Catheterization, affiliated with the Warith International Cancer Institute under the Health and Medical Education Authority of the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, announced the success of a specialized procedure performed on a (50)-year-old patient through the use of the latest interventional radiology protocols.

In a statement obtained by the official website, the center said that “the Al-Hayat Center for Interventional Radiology and Neuro Catheterization, affiliated with the Warith International Cancer Institute under the Health and Medical Education Authority of the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, successfully carried out a specialized procedure on a (50)-year-old patient suffering from an advanced tumor in the head of the pancreas, through the use of the latest interventional radiology protocols to cut off the blood supply to the tumor mass.”

The statement explained that “the medical condition had caused a partial intestinal obstruction and severe body mass loss, making conventional surgical intervention highly risky at that stage.”

It added that “the treatment plan relied on access through a micro arterial catheter to reach the arteries feeding the tumor, followed by the injection of specialized medical substances (adhesive and viscous) designed to block the blood pathways supplying the tumor tissue, which contributes to reducing its size and limiting its activity.”

The center further noted that “this type of intervention is performed under local anesthesia and does not exceed a time limit of (30) minutes. It primarily aims to transform the tumor from an unresectable state into a condition that can be surgically controlled or made more responsive to complementary treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy, with higher success rates.”

These continued medical achievements reflect the level of support and development provided by the General Secretariat of the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine to the healthcare sector, through attracting specialized expertise and equipping its institutions with the latest global medical technologies to deliver treatment services that rival international centers within Iraq.
